The products are Hamilton Beach under-the-cabinet coffee makers and propane hoses instal led on Coleman propane Cookin’ Machines. Hamilton Beach, Inc. received 25 reports in 1989 and 1990 that these coffee makers caught fire. In separate incidents, 2 consumers reportedly burned their hands putting out a coffee maker fire and carrying a burning coffee maker outside. Hamilton Beach, Inc. of Washington, NC, is voluntarily recalling some 42,500 model 816-2 and 816-3 under-the-cabinet drip coffee makers because a defect in the analog clock may cause the appliance to catch fire during use. The recall is limited to the two models, manufactured between November 1987 and November 1988. Recalled appliances may be identified by a label a t the base of the machine bearing the model and the date code stamped into the metal bottom underplate. Only coffee makers with a date code stamped 1187C, 1287C, 0188C, 0488C, 0588C, 0688C, 0788c, 0888C, 0988C, 1088C and 1188C are being recalled. The ap pliances were sold since Novem ber 1987 for approximately $70 each. Consumers who identify their coffee maker as recalled should discontinue use and return it via UPS or Parcel Post, insured with their name and address clearly identified, to Hamilton Beach, Inc. 100 Fontana St., Clinton, NC, 28328. The company will replace the unit without charge and will reimburse consumers for mailing charges. For additional information, con sumers may call Hamilton Beach toll-free a t 1-800-334-2785. In addition, the Coleman Company, Inc. of Wichita, KS, is recalling propane hoses installed on Coleman propane Cookin’ Ma chines because of possible fire hazards. Some 30,000 Cookin’ Machines, manufactured between November 1988 and March 1989, have hoses that may come loose from the fuel valve connection after repeated use. If the hose should loosen when the fuel value is turned “on”, fuel may leak from the hose and could present a risk of per sonal injury or property damage if ignited, it was noted. Aging program set PENN YAN — “Do you feel ‘caught in the middle’ — with a job, a spouse who works, children to take care of, and a mom and dad who need you?” This phenomenon is labeled the “sandwich generation\. In order to bring together a comprehensive group of people who are knowledgeable about the issues facing the “sandwich generation” and to provide an op portunity to gain knowledge they can use, Cornell Cooperative Ex tension home economists in a nine-county region of Western New York, including Yates County, have organized “Celebrate the Family — Aging with a Future”. The program is scheduled from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 15 at Sperry High School, 1799 Lehigh Station Road, Rochester. Anyone “caught in the middle”, or who is working with or plan ning to address the issues of the “sandwich generation”, are en couraged to attend. This includes those working in county offices for aging, chapters of the American Association of Retired Persons, the Retired Senior Volunteer Pro gram, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospitals, human service coalitions, health ^en- cies/councils, intergenerational programs, or potential programs (schools, preschools. Head Start, 4-H, youth bureaus, colleges, church groups), Department of Social Services, and other county agencies, senior centers and more. A number of different continu- Center taking registrations ing education credits have been applied for in connection with this program and certificates of atten dance will be available. The company has received reports of five hoses coming loose and causing some fire damage. The manufacturer suggested retail price was $76 for the stan dard model and $82 for the electronic ignition model. Consumers with a Coleman propane Cookin’ Machine pur chased after November 1987 should discontinue using the product and call Coleman’s toll- free hotline at 1-800-835-3278 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, for instructions concerning replacement of the hose. The com pany has redesigned the hose to correct the potential problem and will provide a replacement hose at no charge to the consumer. It was also noted that both recalls are being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Con sumer Product Safety Commis sion, which can also be contacted toll-free a t 1-800-638-2772.
