' ^ ‘One thing,\ he mentioned, “I fflte about our board is that we “much more time than most people realize.\ As Castner explained, “Somebody figured it up with all the meetings we’ve been having over zoning and everything else, we’re (board members) making about a $1 an hour.\ Castner also said zoning remains an important considera tion. “We’ve been working awfully hard on zoning,\ he asserted. “We’ve hired Nutter (Associates of Rochester) to help with our zoning. “I can see where we need some of it (zoning),\ commented Castner, who lives at 3018 Route 364, Penn Yan, with his wife, Janice, “as long as we aren’t car rying it out too far. “We’re a fanning community,\ he stated, “and a lot of people need more income, whether it’s selling quilts or strawberries, and we don’t want to hurt them.” Unit of the American Cancer Socie^, also cited the need for an effective zoning plan for Benton. “I think it (zoning) is necessary,” expressed Parker, who lives at 824 Route 14A in Penn Yan with her husband, Wiliam, and their two children, Susan and Jeffery. However, as she added, “Some of the new plan that they’re (the planning b^rd) working on, I don’t like. I think it’s too restric tive — a lot of it. “We’ve worked very hard on it (zoning),\ Parker went on to say. “I mean, the planning board has more meetings than anyone.” Among the other issues con fronting Benton, Parker said, her belief that the town needs to at tract more industry in order to help with taxes. “We need industry out here,\ she related, “but you’re not going to get industry out here, you’re going to get industry in the in dustrial park — which is in the village. “But,” added Parker, “basically, it (industrial park) is in the town of Benton — so what we need is more industry.” Sheldon Coon, Sr. Coon, a former town of Benton highway superintendent and a town employee for 35 years, sees taxes and zoning as two prime is sues in this year’s elections. “We have to do something about the taxes,\ stated Coon, who ser ved as highway superintendent for 11 years. \They keep going up and up and up and up and up. “And,” he insisted, “we’ve got to find a way to stop it.” Also, as Coon mentioned, “Things are getting out of hand and pretty soon somebody who’s retired and on a fixed income is going to be taxed out of their home and will have to move. “So,” he continued, “we better do something about it or else we’re going to be out of luck in a few years.” Coon, who retired four years ago and lives on North Plat Road, Penn Yan, also said zoning is a priority in Benton. “We need some sort of guidelines,” he stated, “because nobody is building. So it’s pretty important that we have a good zoning plan.” C o m p u ter C o n sultants 1*39^ CompatiBte iHarcCzuore- and S o ftware TfeCivery, Setup a n d (Program InstaCCation are part o f the safe.
