Fayetteville-Manlius and Jamesville-DeWitt school dis trict seniors achieved the high est mean scores of the 16 school districts in Onondaga County on the 1986 Scholastic Aptitude Test taken last year. East Syracuse-Minoa seniors earned the fifth highest scores in the county. \It is a remarkable situation,\ said Philip Martin, superinten dent of the FM district. \How ever, - we must remember that the school is not the sole factor in these scores. At FM, both the pa rents and the school faculty de mand extra effort from all £he pupils.\ FM students achieved a mean score of476 on the verbal portion of the exam and 527 on the math, the highest scores in the county. Ninty-eight per cent of the FM seniors took the test, according to school records. A study conducted jn 1980 in the FM district indicated that pupils who attended FM for all four high school years scored five to six per cent better than transfer pupils. The mean verbal score in the JD district was 476, and the math score was 520. These are the second highest scores in the county. At ESM there was a a mean score of 452 points on the verbal and 512 on the math section of the test. The three local schools also scored among the top five school districts in the county on the 1985 SATs, although the ESM mean score is lower this year and the FM and JD scores are higher. According to Ronald Osborn, assistant superintendent at JD, 33 per cent of all seniors take the SAT nationally, and 62 per cent statewide. In 1986 at FM, where 98 per cent of the senior class took the test, the district usually aver ages about 95 per cent participa tion. At JD, where 93 per cent of the 1986 senior class took the test, the district experienced the greatest increase in its mean scores in 10 years. Sixty-five per cent of the Class of 1986 took the SAT at ESM. \They were, good scores, but they're down a bit,\ said Andrew Voninski, director of educa tional services at ESM, of the 1986 scores. The SAT, which is scored on a scale of200 to 800 points for both the verbal and math sections, is used by colleges as a method of assessing a student's academic potential. It is a multiple-choice exam testing algebra, geometry, word analogy and reading com prehension skills taken by more than one million high school seniors.
