V f Several of fhti Spanish refagees tiora Mexico jiave arrived at Baton Rouge. We ehould sup pose they would prefer St. Augustine, which, ])esides beingaidost delightful climate, is in re- jlity a Spanish town, where the habits, mau- jers and language are Spanish. An English newspaper, says the Marquis gtafford’s income is £350,000 a year. Earl Grosvenor’s 270,000, Duke of Northumber- jand’s'220“j00d; Duke of Buccleugh_ 22d,000j Jlarl of Derby 120,000; late Earl of Bridgewa ter iJlOOjOOO. There are at least one hundred other noblemen and gentlemen whose incomes vary from 30,0Q0, to 80,000 pounds per annum. The Case o f Dr. Vf^atkins .—Judge Cranch, jn a long opinion has sustained the Demurrers, in the case of Doctor Watkins—that the frauds were not sufiiciently set forth in the indictment. Judge Thurstoii, in dissenting from the opinion of the Court, thought the indictment sufficient, for if otherwise it would be impossible to frame one to sustain a prosecution for fraud at com mon law against the United States—.-a new in dictment has been presented — Cour. Sf Enq. A Meteor — --K. brilliant meteor was seen to pass over Charleston city on the 25lh ult, a little after dark, from the N. W. taking an easterly (jirection. It appeared to be unusually slow in its progress, and was nearly 5 seconds before it became invisible, em itting as it passed many lu- tbiaous sparks. Snow in Georgia .—On the 10th ult. the tops Qf that portion of the Appalachiaa range of mountains, which lie within the limits of Ra bun County, were covered with snow. This is truly “ Jahuaiy in, the lap of May.” The clerks in the New Orleans post office are represented to be grossly delinquent.— On a recent occasion, the mail was brought to the office on a week day, but as it was closed, the carrier took it away, and after considerable search it was found the next morning by the editor, of the Advertiser, in !i tavern near the Basin, lying under a Billiard Table, where it had remained for 19 hours. The Orchestra o f the Arch s treet T heatre, Philadelphia, gave a concert recently. The musicians outnumber the audience. The Macon Telegraph gives an account of a meteorick stone, weighing thirty-six pounds, which fell in Monroe county. Geo. on the 8th of May. Its fall was proceeded by a noise heard at the distance of 25 or 30 miles. The sound was compared to that produced by the discharge of a large can non, quickly followed by a smaller one, and •hen % a great number of muskets. The Baroness Humboldt. —This distinguished lady has lately died. She was the companion of her husband, it is said, in all his scientifick voyages, and lent the aid of her rank and educa tion to countenance learning abroad, as well as extended patronage and encouragement to geuius at home. Her loss, it is remarked, will be felt by many young artists, whose patroness she was. ------ > Breaking on the Wheel .—This took place literally and in a most shocking manner, at the foundry of Mr. Allaire, in Cherry street,, day before yesterday.- John Bur?i a lad 17 years of age, was arranging some machinery in the chamber, in doing which, it was con venient for him to stand upon one of the large cog wheels. While thus situated, the workmen below, unconscious of his posi tion, put the machine in motion. The right foot of the miserable lad was immediately drawn in, and then the whole limb, in a line with the motion ef the wheel, and crushed at every cog. His cries were heard, and the engine stopped just as the dreadful process was commencing on the lower part of his body. To extricate the mangled limb from the wheels, was attended with much diffi culty, W hether he still survives, we have not learned.— Jour, o f Com. Singular Circumstances .—Our attention was called yesterday morning by a friend in Pearl street, to an immense quantity o f fiies of a peculiar kind, which covered the whole side walk and door steps. In a few hours ail of them shed their wings and became bugs, something in the shape o f the common black ant, and then again in a short time either crawled off, or were trodden to death by the people in passing. W hat renders this very singular is the fact, that this is the fourth year that this circumstance has been noted to have taken place, on the same day (May 29th,) at the same time in the morn ing, not being fifteen minutes from 10 o’clock either earlier or later, and in the same place, of which record, was made on each occasion. The flies make their ap pearance at the cellar dobr, and are not seen again, at any other time, nor does their periodical visit seem to be affected in the least by the weather, or backwardness of the season.—Aforni«,o- Herald. Variation o f theJ\Teedle .—In the Number of Professor Silliman’s Journal of Science, just published, are some interesting papers on this subject by the late Gen. Schuyler, Hon. S. De iVitt, Surveyor General of this State, and by Dr. Bowdichj'exhibitingaseriesof observations made simultaneously at Boston, Falmouth and Penobscot, during a period of one hundred and twenty eight years, viz: from 1672 to 1800.— From the letter of Mr. De Witt; it appears that at Albany, and at several other places in this State, the needle has, within a few years, ceased its declination towards the north pole, and has begun to retrograde.—JV. CHAMBERS^ CELEBRATED REMEDY FOR mTBzarisRAzircz:. f i l H E afflicted need very litlle persuasion to . JL apply a remedy, when they have oneg become cop.’Vinced'(hat they are rcaWy afflict^ ed. The. efficacy of an antidote is hardly ever questioned by the person who finds that he has been bitten by a venomous reptile ; but he at once applies the remedy, and looks tefr Us ope ration. Such is the case with those who are perishing under the effects of, the most deadly of all poisons,—liquid fire. They are always ready to try.any rjatiohal remedy, when they are once convinced that they are really dis eased. It is the deluded man alo’rie, who is in- diflerent to, or ignorant of the dreadful flame which js burning up the springs of existence, who stops to inquire, and iriqqiring doubts, of Ihe efficacy of ibis specifick. AH who have tried, with care and discretion, this Remedy for intemperance, which has re ceived so many, commendations from men of science and medical research, have satisfactori ly proved that a regular and timely use of It, will not only cure that hankering for spiritouj% drink which constiltiles the drunkard ; but vriif also prevent any return with which the patient may be threatened, to the source of h 4 malady, in the intoxicating crip. 03= All orders enclosing the usual price, $3„ postage paid, will 'receiv'e immediate attention.
