SS Increase Automatic Social security beneficiaries need not apply for the 20 per­ cent benefit Increase signed into law by President Ntxon on July 1, Charles E. Reynolds, W ater­ town d istrict manager of social security, has announced. All social security bene­ ficiaries who are on the rolls in September will receive the Increase automatically. The in­ crease is effective with b enefits for the month of September, pay­ able in checks dated October 3 . The average monthly benefit for a retired -worker will go up from $134 to $162, and for a retired couple from $224 to about $271. A widowed mother with twochlld- ren wtll reelevean average s o c ial security benefit of about $386, up from $322. For a disabled worker with a wife and one o r more children, the new average monthly payment will be about $354, increased from $295. The new law a ls o provides for automatic increases in social s e ­ curity benefits when the cost of living r is e s in the future. The maximum contribution and benefit base will rise from the present $9,000 a year to $10, 80C in 1973, and to $12,000 in 1974.
